I was assigned the task of picking a magazine and redesigning the cover, masthead, table of contents, and article layout. I picked Popular Photography and Imaging. It is a magazine with good articles, but the design of it is very distracting. Obnoxious colors, inconsistent use of type, no discernable hierarchy... just to name a few problems. My goals with this project were:
- to simplify- everything on the old covers screams at you so nothing stands out,
- to use type and color to create a look for the magazine that was both immediately recognizable yet versatile enough to change with each issue, and
- to create a hierarchy- I decided to take the color scheme for the cover and table of contents from one feature article. That feature article would get the main headline and the cover photo, all other headlines would go underneath the masthead.
